The rediscovery of Terry Callier is one of the proudest moments in Acid Jazz’s long history, so it is with a real pleasure that we are announcing the reissue of the 7 inch version of the song that started it all ‘I Don’t Want To See Myself (Without You)’. A true classic of the modern soul scene.
In 1990 Acid Jazz founder Eddie Piller was a little obsessed by the record, the original of which was fetching astronomical sums on the collectors’ scene of the time. It was the final record released by Callier, whose career – then unexplored – had encompassed recording for Prestige, Chess’s Cadet label and Elektra, before this one off single on the independent Erect label. He decided to track Terry down and license the record for release. After several false attempts he finally found him working as a computer programmer and in July 1990 Acid Jazz reissued the single.
Over the next decade Terry became a regular visitor to the UK, his original recording were recognised for their quite genius and his live shows for their ability to hold and move an audience like no others. He recorded new albums and was at last recognised in a way commensurate with the brilliance of his music. In 2006 Eddie found himself once more in conversation with Terry and they agreed on releasing a 7-inch version of the single with an edit created by Andy Lewis.
This single is long since deleted and now sells for upwards of £30, so with the full co-operation of his daughter Sundiata and licensed from Terry Callier Music we are reissuing the single in March this year, backed with ‘If I Could Make You’ Housed in a wonderful new sleeve, with freshly restored sound, you can now own this astounding record record for a standard price.
