Rumour has it that less than two hundred copies survived a late-’70s fire.

Ferry Djimmy’s life story is one of the most extraordinary you’re ever likely to hear. Born in 1939, Jean Maurille Ogoudjobi (the nickname Ferry comes from ‘ferry djimmy’ being short for ‘please forgive me’ in Yoruba as he was a very smart but unruly kid), Ferry had 43 siblings. By the late 1950s, he started a career as a schoolteacher. As a tall and imposing young man, Ferry also started a parallel career as a boxer. When he wasn’t teaching or fighting, he also caught up with the emerging night scene in the city of Cotonou, where local folklore, Congolese rumba, highlife and Cuban adaptations were favoured by local audiences as well as some blues, jazz and rhythm’n’blues.

By the late 1960s, Ferry had relocated to Paris where he became a policeman, often asked to assist Jacques Chirac on various missions before the future President of France became mayor of Paris in 1977. It was here in the early ’70s he recorded his first two singles, ‘A Were Were We Coco’ and ‘Aluma Loranmi Nichai’. These songs met little interest and by 1974 Ferry was back in Cotonou.

His return to Benin coincided with 1972s revolution’s journey toward Marxist-Leninism. The country’s leader Mathieu Kerekou was impressed by Ferry’s charisma and striking look and became fast friends with him. He saw in him a personality that could seduce the younger generation in a funkier way than straight Socialist speeches. He allowed Ferry a certain budget to start his own record company called Revolution Records.
Inspired by Afrobeat, Nigeria’s Fela Kuti and his musical journey over the past decade, Ferry recorded Rhythm Revolution in Cotonou at the Satel studio. Wanting his musical vision to stay as intact and raw as possible, Ferry played most of the instruments himself – guitar, saxophone, drums/percussion and keyboards.

The resulting album is one of the toughest and deepest slices of African funk ever cut, combining raw African rhythms with distortion, energy and wit. In spite of obvious nods to James Brown, Fela Kuti, George Clinton and Jimi Hendrix, Ferry managed to create something very unique. Eight slices of raw garage-funk from Benin as evidenced by the raw ‘Carry Me Black’, a definitive ode to blackness sung in the West African language Yoruba. A dozen years past Benin’s independence from France, ‘Be Free’ tells the never-ending story about a country’s disillusions and the importance of keeping some African roots, no matter how westernized it could be.

The album’s sleeve, designed by Ferry’s friend and local artist Gratien Zossou, perfectly captures the time and the African revolutionary struggle. It stands as one of the fiercest African LP covers ever designed, inspired by the ANC’s struggle in South Africa as well as the Black Panthers movement in the US.

Ahead of his time with an original artistic vision, fifty years after his heyday, very few Beninese remember Ferry Djimmy’s name. Mathieu Kerekou ordered his ministers and administration to buy this album when it came out. Very few did so. The proceeds were supposed to fund the association for Benin’s paralytics and crippled persons. It was a total failure, nobody bought the album in spite of being played a few times on Benin national radio.

Way too wild, too far out, Rhythm Revolution couldn’t sustain the Ehouzou (Revolution) ideology and Kerekou lost interest in Ferry as his plan to speak to the youth didn’t work out. By 1977, on the advice of Fela Kuti, Ferry had relocated to neighbouring Lagos with his family. Due to the Covid emergency, the group were unable to promote the album live. Recorded and produced again by Nuovi Fratelli (production duo Wayne A. Dickson and Luigi Pasquini), Forward Thinker is a highly sophisticated seven-tracker, with intricate arrangements by Bandleader and keyboardist Joe Nichols, a jazz-funk sound that nods heavily to Herbie Hancock et al’s 70s output.

The album opener and second single (released April 5th) ‘High Time’ sees a hugely successful vocal turn from singer Charlotte de Graaf, over superb Roy Hargrove / Soulquarians style brass arrangements and dynamic playing from the band make this a barnstorming entrance to the record.

Title track ‘Forward Thinker’ is a seriously nimble and funky bass and drums propelled cosmic jazz-dancer. Despite the high energy levels, this is probably the most restrained track on the album, the super sharp brass and constant groove making this an exhilarating winner, reminiscent of Idris Muhammed. A surefire jazz-dance staple in the making.

‘Woodview’ offers a short piano piece of deep and emotional contemplation that suggests the wistful romanticism of Alice Coltrane. This leads seamlessly into the slow burning ‘Another Place’. Setting off where ‘Woodview’ ended, the gentle piano led piece is a supporting vehicle initially for trumpeter Euan Allardice’s lyrical soloing, before an abrupt change of direction as the whole band breaks into a staccato Latin-ish rhythm that unleashes a raw burst of Michael Butcher on the sax.

The album’s second side offers a concept trilogy where Nichols explores the emotional journey that he went on during lockdown. ‘Search For Solace’ sees the band breaking out and really exploring their ensemble playing. The slick drums and bass of Alex Palmer and Mischa Stevens hold down the hip hop funk groove alongside Joe Nichols’ gorgeous piano riffing as the piece grows and expands with standout solos and some delicious moments of release, especially during a wonderful psychedelic synth section that artfully picks up into the deep, rhythmically complex second movement ‘From The Shadows’ that carries us back gently to earth.

The conclusion of the trilogy and first single from the album, ‘To The Light’ is another killer dancing tune that epitomises the band’s ability to absolutely own the jazz-funk groove. Like their playlist-busting version of Yussef Kamaal’s ‘Lowrider’ on their Helix EP, Nimbus Sextet make this appear easy. Nichols’ fingers are on fire as he completes run after run of hyper-speed funkiness over a hard-hitting horn and rhythm section. This track is going to slay the festival crowds this Summer.

Forward Thinker is an outstanding contemporary exploration of Jazz-Funk, from one of the most exciting new jazz groups to emerge in recent years.

Released on 27 May 2022

Originally released in 1980 on the Albarika label, ‘Orchestre Les Volcans Du Benin Vol. 1’ has long been a holy-grail LP for Afro-Cuban music aficionados.

It now sees it’s first official reissue through Acid Jazz and is available on digital platforms for the first time, with four infections tracks, including ‘Oya Ka Jojo’: Latin dancefloor dynamite, and a DJ must-have.

Remastered by Frank Merritt at The Carvery, further igniting these killer recordings.

Released on 13th May 2022

The Step were part of the early ’80s Mod Revival, drawing a marked influence from Classic Soul records. We were then alerted to the fact that Emmanuel had recorded the song as a sublime slice of spiritual soul two years earlier on his own Golden Three Records under the unwieldy name of The Tom – The Emmanuel & Ron Experience. In fact it was the flip of the crossover soul masterpiece ‘When You Lose You Groove’. Soon after Amalbert recorded another album which this time featured Pharoah Sanders in the horn line-up. Soul clubs were popping up in virtually every major town in the North West of England & Midlands. Rare American soul music was all the rage and unbeknownst to Dean his track ‘I’m On My Way’ was one of the biggest tracks.
